The next Newport Parish Council meeting is at Newport Primary School (The Hall entrance) at 7pm on Tuesday 11th March 2025 – all village residents are welcome. Access to the meeting room is through the main gate on the Village Hall side of the school and to the rear of the building.    

Public Forum – The Public Forum will commence at 7.00pm. The period designated for public participation shall not exceed 15 minutes. Each member of the public may only speak once and for no longer than 3 minutes.

INTERACT2 Loneliness Large Study in Hull. Research and Development, Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust.

Please share and complete this very important survey related to loneliness and isolation, it only takes 5 minutes and it will hopefully have an effect on governmental funding in the area. The study aims to map social isolation and loneliness around Hull. The findings will hopefully influence policy makers. We are looking for people with any HU postcode preferably. 

The Research and Development department at The Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust has a very large survey study at the moment which we need to direct towards the right audiences. We need to recruit a huge sample from the Hull area from anyone with a HU postcode preferably. Our team needs to reach circa 15000 Participants for this study.

This study is in connection with loneliness and isolation in the general population of Kingston upon Hull, it is called INTERACT2. The Chief Investigators for the study are hoping to apply for governmental funding to affect policy change following this study.

North Humber to High Marnham: Notification of statutory consultation launch

National Grid Electricity Transmission plc (National Grid) has launched a statutory consultation in accordance with sections 42 and 47 of the Planning Act 2008 (the Act) for its North Humber to High Marnham Project. The consultation will run from 18 February to 15 April 2025.

Avian Influenza outbreak

Since November 2024, we’ve had seven outbreaks of Avian Influenza in East Riding.

Currently, all of East Riding is in a regional Avian Influenza Prevention Zone (AIPZ). This means all bird keepers must enhance biosecurity measures and house their birds to protect them from bird flu. This applies to pet birds, commercial flocks, and backyard birds.
These measures are crucial to prevent further outbreaks. Additional measures are required within the disease control zones around the outbreaks. You can use the DEFRA Avian Influenza Interactive Map to check if a location is within a control zone.
Since October 1, 2024, everyone in Great Britain who keeps any number of poultry (whether as pets or a hobby) or Captive birds not kept fully housed in a dwelling (or another indoor structure) with no access to open air must register their details with the Animal and Plant Health Agency.
This measure has allowed a revised approach to foot patrols. Instead of visiting or contacting every premises within the declared zone, the Council will use a media campaign to raise awareness of the restrictions and the need to register if any bird keepers have not already done so.

ERYC will support the national plan by placing highway signs at the 10km zone boundary to inform people they are entering an area with animal disease restrictions. Posters will be put up within the 3km zone to inform bird keepers of the requirements, and Council Animal Health Officers will have a presence in the area to monitor compliance.

Avian Influenza primarily affects birds. The UK Health Security Agency states that the risk to public health is very low. The Food Standards Agency assures that avian influenza poses a very low food safety risk. Properly cooked poultry and eggs are safe to eat.

The national contingency plan involves APHA humanely culling affected poultry on infected premises. No healthy birds are culled, but restrictions are placed on poultry and captive bird keepers in the control zones.
In brief, for those in the 3km protection zone:

* Keep poultry and other captive birds housed.
* Do not move poultry, other captive birds, or mammals to or from premises where birds are kept, except under licence.
* Record individuals visiting premises where birds are kept.
* Ensure appropriate biosecurity measures are in place.

The restrictions around outbreaks are likely to remain for at least the next 6 weeks, but the Regional Prevention Zone is likely to remain in place until the risk of new cases has reduced, which may be several months.

Warning as ‘winter vomiting bug’ affects Humber region

Hospital infection expects are advising people to stay away from hospital if they have symptoms of a highly contagious virus.

Hospitals around the country are seeing patients with norovirus, which causes nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and stomach pain.

Also known as the ‘winter vomiting bug’ because of its prevalence during the colder months, Norovirus can affect people of all ages and thrives in closed environments such as hospitals, care homes and schools. Older or frail people and those with underlying health conditions are at particular risk from norovirus.

Now, the Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) team at NHS Humber Health Partnership, which runs Hull Royal Infirmary, Castle Hill Hospital, Goole Hospital, Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital and Scunthorpe General, is advising people to stay away from any hospital or care facility if they have any symptoms or are feeling unwell.

Assistant Chief Nurse Wendy Millard, Deputy Director of IPC, said: “By taking simple precautions like washing your hands after using the bathroom and before eating or preparing food can prevent you catching the virus in the first place.

“And if you do have any symptoms or feel unwell for any other reason, please help us by staying away from our hospitals and not visiting relatives or loved ones until 48 hours after your symptoms have stopped.

“If you have a hospital appointment but develop symptoms, please contact the number on your appointment letter to reschedule.”

The virus is transmitted by consuming contaminated food or water, touching contaminated surfaces or coming into close contact with someone already infected with norovirus. It is resilient and can survive on surfaces for days or even weeks, which makes it easy to spread from person to person.

Symptoms including the sudden onset of nausea, vomiting, watery diarrhoea, stomach cramps, low-grade fever and muscle pain usually start within 12 to 48 hours of coming into contact with the virus and can last for one to three days.

Although most normally healthy people recover without medical treatment, the illness can be severe for young children, older adults and individuals with weakened immune systems due to the risk of dehydration.

Newport Parish Council – Christmas Lights 2024

The Newport Christmas Lights switch on will take place on Friday 29th November 2024. Newport Primary School will lead the Carol singing from 6.30pm at the Christmas Tree adjacent to the Market Weighton Canal with the lights switch on at 7pm

Residents are encouraged to arrive from 6.15pm. Local businesses are invited to participate on the day. The Kings Arms would like to welcome all for refreshments and festive music post switch on.

Santa will join us on the evening.

David Scott Charity – ANNUAL GRANTS TOWARDS HEATING COSTS

The David Scott charity can contribute towards heating costs for local over 80s

All Cllrs, Ward Cllrs and any interested residents are invited to attend.
